An absolute masterpiece of mid-Victorian shell carving, this exceptional antique cameo brooch captures a breathtaking celestial allegory: the transition of Night into Day. Masterfully hand-carved from a rich sardonyx helmet shell, the cameo features a rare, intricately layered double profile (jugata). In the foreground sits Hemera (the goddess of Day), alert and gazing upward, crowned by a spectacular, radiant sunburst diadem. Nestled closely behind her is Nyx (the goddess of Night), her eyes softly downcast in sleep, set against a background delicately etched with a crescent moon and stars. Emerging from a bed of beautifully stylized, billowing clouds at the base is Jupiter’s eagle, its wings spread wide to greet the dawn. In classical antiquity, the eagle was a powerful celestial messenger, frequently associated with carrying the sun across the sky. The level of detail in this carving is a testament to the skill of a master artisan—from the crisp, individual feathers of the eagle to the soft, lifelike waves of the goddesses' hair. The shell is securely housed in a brilliant oval bezel, framed by an exquisite, delicate border of Victorian wirework openwork loops. This ornate, airy frame adds the perfect touch of texture, balancing the substantial, sculptural quality of the high-relief carving. A truly investment-grade piece for the discerning antique collector.
